bassetts of Glamorgan

The BASSETT surname is of Norman origin and can be traced back in England to the time of William the Conqueror.  Jeff Bassett (www.bassettbranches.org) has devoted years of research to this surname.  He has obtaining Y-DNA testing of 150+ males with the BASSETT surname.  This testing demonstrates that numerous, different Bassett families exist in the British Isles and that even several lines exist within Wales.

I am descended from Charles Bassett who lived in Cowbridge in the mid-1700s; through his son, Thomas (Click for Descendant Chart) was an Excise Officier (which explains why he had a son, John, born in Llanstephen, CMN in 1778 and Richard born in Somerset in 1774).  This Thomas Bassett married Jane Leyson in Welsh St Donats in 1758.  Their son, Richard was born in Wiveliscombe, Somersetshire and married at St Mary Hill parish, Glamorganshire in 1796.  His granddaughter, Rebecca left Wales in the 1870s for the coal fields of NE Pennsylvania.  4-5 years of Bassett research by my cousin, Walter Degear & I have focused specifically upon BASSETTs from Glamorgan (and some descendants in northern California).  This work has its foundation in the 20+ years of research carried out by my 3rd cousin, Barrie Diamond of Cardiff, Wales.  Barrie donated his monograph to the LDS Family History Library.  I have obtained a copy of this valuable document.  Very recently Bob Sanders of Cardiff made a break-through discovery of the father of my Richard Bassett. Bob does wonderful genealogy research and is available for hire.

Jeff Bassett’s Y-DNA work shows that southern Wales is home

to 3 somewhat related families:

Bassetts of Beaupre (Thomas d. 1423)

Lewis Bassett b. 1683 of Lavernock

Anthony Bassett of Llanelly

My branch (descendants of Charles Bassett of Cowbridge are not closely related to the above 3 lines but are instead closely related to Jeff’s line #127B of Charles Bassett b. ca 1857 in Staffordshire

I have assembled what I believe to be the largest database of Glamorgan BASSETTs.  Click on any of the hyperlinks above to go to my Reunion9 Web card catalog which will enable you to click on the name index to navigate to the person of interest.  I also have off-line copies of every BASSETT Will probated in Wales.
